The BASEL City Hall (Rathaus) is located in Marktplatz since the 14th century. The Red City Hall is a Renaissance building, was built in 1507-13 as a prestigious building to mark the acceptance of Basel in the Swiss Confederation. Due to its solid construction, the building survived the 1356 earthquake that destroyed a large part of Basel, suffering only some damage to the crowns of the towers. The City Hall hosted at this majestic building, richly decorated with red sandstone, has become the most significant historical building of Basel.
