River Nene and London Road Bridge - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Virtual tour showing the River Nene next to the Key Theatre in Peterborough. This picture was taken from the top of a canal boat with the kind permission of the boat owner, which gives a much better view of the river and buildings leading to the city center. Several curious swans swam up to see what was going on, probably in hope of bread. Picture taken June 2011.
River Nene and London Road Bridge - FURTHER INFORMATION
River Nene and London Road Bridge - Peterborough visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'River Nene and London Road Bridge' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Cambridgeshire.
The River Nene is the 10th longest river in England, flowing about 100 miles from it's source near Badbury through Peterborough and the Fens to it's mouth entering the North Sea at The Wash. Just east of the London Bridge in Peterborough is an old customs house, not open to the public, where officers would manage and inspect river barges mooring at the city. Nearby today are several local tourist attractions such as the Key Theatre, the Peterborough Lido and River Embankment Park.
The whole length is followed by the Nene Way, a waymarked walking route. It is also popular for fishing, angling and boating in various sections, as evidenced by the canal boats in this image. Parts of the Nene Way can also be cycled. Just west of Peterborough, at Wansford, the Nene Way is joined by the Hereward Way, another long walking trail, which continues with the Nene Way east until parting company again at Whittlesey.
