The Oeschinensee - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This is a perfect hiking area in the area around Lake Oeschinen in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland. The lake can be reached by a chair lift or by hiking from the nearby village of Kandersteg. The lake is ringed by dramatic cliffs on all sides and in winter is used for cross country skiing.

Oeschinensee is a mountain lake in Swizerland known for the fantastic mountain scenery. The lake is set in the mountains at an elevation of 1578m near to the village of Kandersteg. It is not large by the standards of some Swiss lakes, with a surface area of 1.15 km², and a maximum depth of 56m. The lake is well known for crystal clear blue waters. It is possible to take boat trips out onto the lake int he summer. There is a hotel by the lake, the Hotel Restaurant Oeschinensee, which has an open-air café and serves delicious food and local specialties.
To get to the lake, take the chairlift from the village of Kandersteg. From the top of the chair a path leads high above the north shore of the lake. The viewpoint above the lake give a great panorama of the lake and the surrounding mountains which rise sheer from the lake itself. The peaks of these mountains tend to be covered in snow all year round. The path descends to the lake through the pastures in the summer.
The area is well known for walking in the summer. A small, but well marked path leads up form the shore of Lake The Oeschinensee to Fruenden Hut set further up in the mountains. This walk takes nearly 3 hours and is quite arduous. Appropriate mountain clothing is a must if you undertake this walk.
