Split Harbour - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

Picture showing the view of Split from one of the harbour wharfs. You can see the Palace of Diocletian and the view over the harbour to Marjan Hill. Virtual tour taken in September 2011. The lifeboat in the foreground is ferrying passengers from a large cruise ship moored outside the harbour.

Split Harbour - FURTHER INFORMATION

Split Harbour - Split visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Split Harbour' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Split-Dalmatia County.

Split Harbour forms a beautiful foreground to Split. The harbour front is lined with relaxing cafes and shops along a promenade. From the harbour the ancient walls of Diocletian's Palace built by Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century clearly stand out, with the 12th century bell tower rising above them.

On the far side of the harbour is a large marina full of various sailing and leisure yachts. Beyond this rises the Marjan Hill, covered in pine trees.

Croatia - Sailing, Boating and Cruise Holidays

Split harbour is the starting point for various holiday cruises run by outfits like Sail Croatia, Katarina Lines and Sail Croatia Adventures. These holidays take groups of various sizes along the Dalmatian coast, island hopping and visiting the various historic sights and towns en route. Typically these cruises last a week, and can be tailored specifically for the group on board, whether it is for clubbing, cycling or just relaxing in secluded bays.

Sailing and boating holidays are becoming an increasingly popular way to explore the Croatian coast. Prices are often commensurate to remaining on land and at mid-range hotels, but passengers get the benefit of gliding along the coastline from place to place without being stuck in a coach. Then there is the appeal of swimming, snorkelling and diving in bays you could never easily get to from a land based holiday.

Ferries from Split

Ferries depart from the eastern side of Split Harbour for various destinations on the surrounding islands, mainland and Italy. Tickets for the ferries are available at various kiosks along the key-side and the main ferry terminal, where a large board gives the departure times and quay numbers for each of the ferries. Most of the ferries are run by Jadrolinija ferries, who run almost all the ferries around Croatia.

At the main ferry terminal there is a small supermarket, cafe and toilets.

Split ferries serve the following destinations on a regular basis:

  • Dubrovnik (mainland city, popular destination, UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Korcula (famous fortified town on Korčula island)
  • Mljet (island famous for the national park)
  • Rijeka (third largest city on Croatian mainland)
  • Vis (principle town on Vis island)
  • Hvar (principle town on Hvar island, well known for it's night clubs)
  • Spetare (main town on the holiday island of Brač)
  • Stari Grad (old town on the northern side of Hvar island)
  • Trogir (historic port town and UNESCO list of World Heritage Site on the mainland coast with ferry connections to Drvenik)
  • Ancona (in Italy)
  • Pescara (in Italy)
