Split Harbour from West Side - FURTHER INFORMATION

Split Harbour from West Side - Split visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Split Harbour from West Side' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Split-Dalmatia County.

Split Harbour is a hive of activity in Split, both for the boats that use it and the tourists visiting the various sights and restaurants. One of the most important tourist attractions, the Roman Palace of Diocletian built in the 4th century lies on the eastern end of the harbour front. Inside the palace enclave is Split Cathedral and the prominent 12th century bell tower. In front of this runs a prominent promenade lined with hotels, restaurants and shops.

At the western end of the harbour front is , the principle city square in which concerts are held during the summer. The harbour then curves round to a massive marina full of luxury leisure and sailing yachts. Rising behind the western edge is Marjan Hill, a national park covered in pine trees.

Croatia - Sailing, Boating and Cruise Holidays

Many sailing and cruising holidays along the Dalmatian coast start from Split harbour. Among them are holidays run by Sail Croatia, Katarina Lines and Sail Croatia Adventures. A cruise is a fantastic way to visit the Dalmatian coast, offering island hopping while visiting the various historic sights and towns en route. Typically lasting a week, the cruise holiday can be tailored specifically for the group on board, whether it is for clubbing, cycling or just relaxing in secluded bays.

Prices are often commensurate to remaining on land and at mid-range hotels, but passengers get the benefit of gliding along the coastline from place to place without being stuck in a coach. Then there is the appeal of swimming, snorkelling and diving in bays you could never easily get to from a land based holiday. As a result, a cruise holiday for a small group on a chartered boat is becoming an unceasingly popular way to explore Croatia.

Ferries from Split

Split is also an international hub for various Ferries, which depart from the eastern side serving the surrounding coastline cities, islands and Italy. Tickets for the ferries can be purchased at the main ferry terminal, where a large board gives the departure times and quay numbers for each of the ferries. Most of the ferries are run by Jadrolinija ferries, who run almost all the ferries around Croatia. A small supermarket, cafe and toilets are also located around the terminal building.

Split ferries serve the following destinations on a regular basis:

  • Dubrovnik (mainland city, popular destination, UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Korcula (famous fortified town on Korčula island)
  • Mljet (island famous for the national park)
  • Rijeka (third largest city on Croatian mainland)
  • Vis (principle town on Vis island)
  • Hvar (principle town on Hvar island, well known for it's night clubs)
  • Spetare (main town on the holiday island of Brač)
  • Stari Grad (old town on the northern side of Hvar island)
  • Trogir (historic port town and UNESCO list of World Heritage Site on the mainland coast with ferry connections to Drvenik)
  • Ancona (in Italy)
  • Pescara (in Italy)
