The Meštrović Gallery contains an important collection of the works of Ivan Meštrović, a Croatian artist who lived in Split. The palace building was designed by Mestrovic himself and built between 1931-39, to be used as both living quarters, workshop and exhibition area. Meštrović left Split for Zagreb in 1941, with his family following a year later. On his death in 1935, Meštrović left the Gallery palace to the Republic of Croatia.
This initial donation included some 70 works specified by the artist for display in both this gallery and the Split and in the Kastelet-Crikvine and The Holy Cross Chapel complex found just down the road. This collection has gradually grown and now includes over 192 sculptures, 583 drawings, 4 paintings, 291 architectonic plans and 2 furniture sets he designed. The collection also holds various Mestrovic works owned by his heirs.
Meštrović Gallery is on Šetalište Ivana Meštrovića, close to both Ježinac beach and Zvoncac Beach on the southern side of the Marjan Hill. It is one of the notable sights and attractions in Split, entrance fees apply.
