Occupied since at least the 2nd century BC, and know in Roman times as Vicus Popilius, Riccione grew up next to a crossing of the Rio Melo river. The village was acquired by the Agolanti family in the 13th century which increased it's importance and in the 17th century towers were built to defend the town against pirates.
Since the 19th century, Riccione has been a popular tourist destination, now one of the best known towns on the Romagna Riviera, along with just a little to the north. It was often visited by the rich from Bologna and in 1934 Benito Mussolini built a retreat here. Today this bustling town still thrives on tourism, with people being drawn to the beaches, shops and restaurants. The town has all kinds of hotels for all budgets.
Riccione - Sights and Tourist Attractions
Being on the Romagna Riviera, Riccione is most famous for its beach and clubs, it is one of the best know resort towns on the Adriatic Coast in Northern Italy. The city is famous for it's clubs and bars, as well as theme parks which bring in families. Many of the hotels offer bike hire, as cycling holidays in the region are also popular. As well as the beaches, clubs, bars and amusement parks, other attractions include:- Valmarecchia natural Observatory (Oasis Montebello) - park in Valmarecchia covering 1200 hectares with interesting geological formations and rare flora and fauna.
- Oasis of wildlife and bird observatory of the Basin - river park covering some 702 hectares between Morciano of Romagna and the river mouth.
- Natural Park of Cervia - established in 1963, an oasis of peace restocked with donkeys, deer, horses, deer, goats, cows Romagna, buffaloes, ornamental ducks, swans, geese, pheasants, peacocks.
- Po Delta Park - covering 52,000 hectares of protected wetlands, full of rare plants and animals.
- Aquafan - swimming park with water slides, rapids, group work outs and large swimming pools to relax in, ideal for the whole family.
- Villa Mussolini - built for Mussolini, this villa is now a museum and exhibition space surrounded by beautiful gardens which host various events during the summer.

Flight: Miramare Airport, Rimini
Train: Riccione Station with regular connections to major Italian cities.
Road: Riccione is on the A14 toll road about 15km south of Rimini and 120km south of Bologna.
