Sv Marije Island - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Picture of the view over Veliko jezero from Sv Marije Island. The environment here is lovely. Though an important, and well visited sight, the island is very relaxing, with paths around and covered in pine trees. It is famous for the Monastery of St Mary. This virtual tour image shows a view from near the top of the island looking out onto Mljet National Park.

Sv Marije island is one of the most important landmarks and sights within Mljet National Park, and the whole of Mljet Island in Croatia. This tiny island in the middle of Veliko Jezero is home to a 12th century Benedictine Monastery of St Mary.
The Benedictines arrived in Sutmiholjska cove on Miljet having travelled from Monte Gargano in Italy in 1151. They became the feudal lords of the island and Prince Desa of the House of Vojislavljević in Serbia built the monastery for them on Sv Marije between 1187–1198. The community remained on the island until 1809 when it was disbanded. Since the the monastery has been used as a forestry management office, hotel and, today, a restaurant.
