Swimming off Sv Marije Island - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Taken in September 2011, this panorama shows a view off the back of Sv Marije island in Mljet National Park. A stone pathway runs around most of the island, though it is flooded in part. At the rear of the island is a fantastic swimming spot frequently enjoyed by locals.

Sv Marije Island is one of the most important sights in Mljet National Park. Located in a cove of Veliko Jezero (Big Lake) near the western end of Mljet Island, the island is famous for the 12th century Benedictine Monastery of Saint Mary which was built upon it. The island also has some older Roman ruins at the top.
As well as coming to see the church and ruins, visitors can walk around the stone path to a lovely swimming spot at the rear, with crystal clear waters surrounded by the hills and trees of the park. It is a very relaxed spot and often very secluded. There is a restaurant near the ferry jetty on the park from where you can get refreshments.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Ferry: small ferries run from Sv Marije Island to both Malo jezro and Pristaniste. From Pristaniste a mini-bus runs regularly to Polače.
