Named after murrnong, the Aboriginal word for yam daisy, Myrniong lies near the Western Freeway and Lerderderg River a short distance west of Melbourne. The yam daisy (Microseris lanceolata) was a popular food source. Europeans first arrived in the area around 1850, growing crops to feed gold miners in nearby Blackwood. This then moved to beef and dairy farming.
Many of the buildings in Myrniong are made of bluestone, a distinctive basalt or olivine basalt quarried throughout Victoria. These include the historic Plough Hotel, established in 1859, and the Anglican church, which have become local attractions.
