Lying in the Lötschental valley south of the Bernese Alps, is the small village of Blatten, part of the Blatten municipality. Surrounded by stunning mountains and close to Naters, Blatten is popular year round for both walking and climbing in the summer and skiing during the winter months. The villages around have numerous good hotels, holiday chalets and apartments to cater for all budgets.

Blatten and the hamlets of Eisten and Weissenried are designated as part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.

Blatten - Sights and Attractions

Almost all the main attractions in and around Blatten are natural. The village is set deep in a valley surrounded by mountains with a nearby glacier. Some of the top sights include:
  • Aletschbord - small village at 2140m, a short walk from Belalp with stunning views of the Aletsch glacier.
  • Aletsch Glacier - 23km long and covering over 120km², this is the largest glacier in Europe and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. It is fed into by the Great Aletschfirn, Jungfraufirn and Ewigschneefeld glaciers which converge at Concordia.
  • Aletsch Glacier Footbridge - 124m long hanging footbridge across the tongue of the Aletsch Glacier.
  • Gorge of Massa Belalp - canyoning near the Alestch Glacier on a route that includes an 8-meter jump into a beautiful waterbasin and the 30-meter descent on a rope into the Cathedral.
  • Bettmeralp - at 1,950m the village with the 17th century chapel of Maria zum Schnee is accessible by cable car from Blatten.
  • Märjelensee - small lake which formed on the eastern side of the Aletsch Glacier in the 19th century.
  • Breithorn - 4165m high peak whose SSW Flank is one of the most climbed routes in the Swiss Alps due to the Klein Matterhorn cable car.
  • Schwarzsee (Black Lake) - small mountain lake and popular walking spot.

TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE

Road: Blatten is about 40km from and , heading west along the E62 and then north up the Lötschental valley. It is 124km east of Montreux and the eastern end of Lake Geneva.
Train: Goppenstein‎ station, some 10km south, which has services to Spiez and Birg.
Bus: Blatten (Lötschen) with services to Fafleralp Gampel-Steg and Goppenstein.
