Mount Somers is a small town at the eastern edge of the Southern Alps in Canterbury, New Zealand. The scenery around Mount Somers is stunning, which has seen a growth in the number of holiday homes in recent years. Just behind the town is a mountain of the same name, reaching nearly 1700m. Interest in the area has also grown since the filming of the Lord of the Rings series as Mount Sunday, a hill nearby overlooking the Rangitata River valley, was the setting for Elderas, the capital of the Rohan riders.
Mount Somers is the gateway to the Mesopotamia, Mount Potts, and Erewhon sheep stations. It is also the last town before Hakatere airstrip and a good place to stock up before exploring the likes of Mount Barrosa, Mount Tripp, Mount Harper, Mount Taylor Mount Hutt and the Ashburton Lakes.
