In the distance you can clearly see the Sky Tower, highest building of the southern hemisphere with 328 m.

At 196m high, Mount Eden is the highest natural point in the Greater Auckland area and central landmark of the Mount Eden Domain. This volcanic cone is considered extinct, last erupting about 15,000 years ago and at the top is a 50m deep crater. It is known as Maungawhau (Mountain of the Whau tree) in Māori, who used the hill as a fort, or pa, in the past. The European name is in honour of George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland.
Lying about 5km south of Auckland city center, Mount Eden provides great panoramic views in all directions of the Auckland isthmus. Because of it's location and height, Mount Eden is a very popular tourist attraction, which has led to some concerns over degradation of the site.
Mt Eden itself is not the only attraction in the area for those wishing to explore. On the southern side of the cone is Eden Garden, a free, public garden covering 2 hectares of former quarry land with one of the largest collection of camellias in New Zealand as well as many other varieties of plants. While adjacent to the east are Government House and Withiel Thomas Park, an important ecological sites containing lava forest remnants.
