Marco Polo Tower in Korcula - FURTHER INFORMATION
Marco Polo Tower in Korcula - Korcula Island visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Marco Polo Tower in Korcula' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Dubrovnik-Neretva.
The renowned traveller Marco Polo (1254 - 1324) is reputed to have been born in Korcula itself. Although evidence to support this thesis is sketchy, the town still boasts Marco Polo's alleged house of birth.
The key feature of this house is the tower (loggia). For a small fee you can climb the narrow stairs of the tower to enjoy amazing panoramic views of Korcula. Well worth the trip whether he lived there or not. The house has been bought by the Korcula Town Hall and there are plans to develop it into a Museum of Marco Polo.
The house / tower is located in Korcula Old Town, which is a beautiful place to wander around and includes other attractions. The Museum of Korcula houses displays of Korcula's history, skills and crafts including collections from the famous Croatian sculptor Frano Krsinic (1897 - 1982). The Bishop's Treasury of Korcula holds a small but amazing collection of fine and sacral art including work by Carpaccio, Bassano, some Raphael drawings and a Leonardo da Vinci sketch. The Museum of Icons displays Byzantine icons from the 13th - 15th century and 17th -18th century ceremonial pieces.
