Charles Bridge

Photographer Description of Charles Bridge

Taking a panoramic photograph from the middle of Charles Bridge in Prague is not as easy as it sounds. The bridge is one of the most popular attractions in Prague, and therefore full of people. It took some 30 minutes waiting for parts of the bridge to clear enough that the pictures would show more than a mass of tourists.

Charles Bridge - Further Information

Panorama of the Charles Bridge (Karlův most) in Prague. The Charles Bridge is one of the most visited and popular tourist attractions in Prague. It is in the Old Town (Staré Město) of Prague, which is the most beautiful district of the city, and the one most popular with tourists. Naturally there are numerous hotels, bars and cafes around the area. In this panoramic picture you can see the Staré Město bridge tower on the eastern end of the bridge. The bridge has 32 statues and monuments. This panorama was taken opposite the Crucifixion scene near the eastern end. On the opposite side of the bridge here is the 'Pieta' statue.

Charles Bridge is a stone Gothic bridge that connects the Old Town and Malá Strana. It was built in 1357 to replace an earlier bridge that was swept away by a flood of the River Vltava in 1342. The bridge was commissioned by Charles IV. For a long time it was known as the Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) and for a long time was the only crossing of the Vltava linking the two halves of Prague. After 400 years, in 1870, the bridge was renamed the 'Charles Bridge'.
