Surprise View Peak District - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

This view is from near the summit of surprise view in the peak district. From the car park you think you're near the summit, but then see another summit over the hill. This was the 3rd of 4 walking up.

Surprise View Peak District - FURTHER INFORMATION

Surprise View Peak District - Peak District visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Surprise View Peak District' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Derbyshire.

“Surprise View” is a vantage point in the Peak District that offers great views of the Derwent Valley, the Hope Valley from Hathersage to Hope and Castleton, the Great Ridge (Lose Hill to Mam Tor), Win Hill and Kinder.

Surprise View viewpoint is almost unique in the Peak District in that it is accessible by wheelchair from the nearby Surprise View car park (pay and display). The path is well maintained and has been praised for its accessibility. Surprise View car park is situated on the main Sheffield to Hathersage road (A6187). Driving from Sheffield you will pass the Fox House Inn, Longshaw and Lawrence Field. The car park is adjacent to the Robin Hood Inn.

The view can also be appreciated from the vantage point at Millstone Edge Nick - the gap in the rock walls through which the road passes. By standing on the southern side above the road the view is just astonishing, but there is also a seat to take in the view on the opposite side of the road. If you are driving along this road towards this point, take care not to be distracted when the view suddenly emerges.

This is a great view that to savour as the sun sets. The rock face is beautifully lit by the warm evening sun and this brings out the colours in the cliff.

A good short walk (2.8miles / 4.5 km, takes about 1hr 30mins) is to start from the Surprise View car park, walk up through the birch trees to Mother Cap and explore the weather-worn rocks there. Up Over Owler Tor, Millstone Edge, and back past the quarries to Surprise View view point.

Other places to see from here: Millstone Edge and Padley Gorge can be reached from here and a short distance away is Stanage Edge.
