Loch Garry - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

I like the colour of the afternoon sun in this image of Loch Garry, and it was quite relaxing to take the picture. Loch Garry reminds me of 'the hip bone is joined to...' song since Loch Quoich is joined to Loch Garry, Loch Garry is joined to Loch Oich, Loch Oich is joined to Loch Lochy and Loch Lochy is joined (via River Lochy) to Loch Linnhe at Fort William. And the water flows all the way to the sea thought a couple of hydroelectric dams on the way.

Loch Garry - FURTHER INFORMATION

Loch Garry - Scottish Highlands visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Loch Garry' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Highland.

Panorama of Loch Garry (Scottish Gaelic: Loch Garadh) in the Scottish Highlands. This freshwater loch is about 11km long created by the building of a hydroelectric dam. It is fed by waters from Loch Quoich to the west and drains eastwards into Loch Oich at Invergarry. Loch Garry is quite shallow, only 50m deep, and not very wide considering the length. It is famous for the 'Map of Scotland' formed by the western end of the loch when viewed from the A87 just before the road curves round the hill of Mullach Coire Ardachaidh (539m) to Loch Loyne and then down to Glen Moriston and Loch Cluanie.

This panoramic photograph, taken in the late afternoon sun near to Munerigie, shows the view along the loch with the hills of Beinn Bhreac (440m) and Meall Ard Achaidh (338m) on the far side. Behind Beinn Bhreac is Ben Tee (901m), one of the Munro's of Scotland. In the middle of Loch Garry are a few small islands.

This loch has been used as background scenery in Braveheart and Rob Roy, both movies were filmed here in the 1990s. The area is mostly used for forestry and some crofting (tenant farming). Although skillfully cultivated, this landscape very much feels like the wilderness because of the visible absence of housing or other roads nearby. It's only a half hour's drive from Fort William but it's attraction is mostly for hillwalkers of all abilities, keen to take advantage of it's convenient access points to many noted walks in its unspoilt landscape, where only a short stroll will allow you to feel entirely out of sight well away from civilisation.

Travel and Getting There
The A87 runs along part of Loch Garry on the way from Invergarry to Kyle of Loch Alsh and the Isles of Skye. The eastern end of the loch is about 2 miles form Invergarry, about 52 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh. Around ten minutes drive north, the road joins the A87 near Cluanie Dam for Inverness.
