I did not know that Beauly Priory was here, and only saw it by chance. Taking panoramic photographs inside ruins is always something I enjoy, and this panorama was no different. The picture gives some impression of how Beauly Priory when intact.

Beauly Priory was a Valliscaulian monastic community, founded in 1230 and documented as being sited at "Insula de Achenbady", now known as Beauly. It is believed to have been founded by John Bisset, although it has also been claimed to have been founded by King Alexander II of Scotland. The influence of the french-speaking monks and wealthy landowners is believed to have contributed to the town being named as "Beaulieu" meaning beautiful place.

Although there are historical archives tracing the Priory back to the 13th century, very little is known of it's history. The ruins are 100 yards from the town square and have some tourist information displays to guide visitors. The grounds outside Beauly Priory are well maintained and are a pleasant and popular location of interest.

Travel and Getting There
Beauly it approx 10 miles north west of Inverness, 5 miles west of Dingwall, or 15 miles west from Drumnadrochit and Loch Ness on the A87 from Kyle.
