SKYCITY is a major tourist attraction in Auckland. Completed in 1997, the complex contains a casino, SKYCITY Hotel, a 700 seat theatre, a convention centre, 12 bars and restaurants and the Sky Tower. Adjacent to SKYCITY is the new 5-star SKYCITY Grand Hotel which has 316 luxury rooms and suites and is linked to SKYCITY by an airbridge.
After the making of Lord of the Rings, SKYCITY has also opened WETA CAVE, a retail shop offering almost any related to the film.
Sky Tower Tourist Attraction
Built as an observation and telecommunications tower, Sky Tower rises to a height of 328 metres above SKYCITY and central Auckland, making it the tallest free-standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere. The tower is a major tourist attraction, drawing in about 1,500 visitors a day. The upper portion of the tower contains restaurants and cafes, including a revolving restaurant situated 190m above ground which rotates 360° every hour. This provides stunning views over the city and very romantic dinging during sunset.Within Sky Tower are also 3 other viewing platforms, each offering 360° panoramic views over the city. The main observation deck is just below the revolving restaurant, at 186m, with a partial glass floor allowing daring visitors to stand on the 38mm thick glass and look straight down.
