Guildford Cathedral is the mother church of the Diocese of Guildford. It has a seating capacity of 1000 and acts as a venue for concerts, art and education, a place of pilgrimage, as well as stillness, prayer and daily choral worship.
The Diocese of Guildford was defined in 1927 when Winchester Diocese was divided into three due to increasing population across the area. Initially, Holy Trinity Church in Guildford High Street was used as the Cathedral. It soon became clear that it was not large enough so the Diocese decided in 1928 that a new Cathedral was needed.
Initially, an architectural competition was held for the design of the new building and 183 architects submitted proposals. From these five architects were invited to submit full designs. The final winner, Edward Maufe, was appointed Cathedral Architect in 1933.
The foundation stone of the new Cathedral was laid in 1936. However, the second world war and post war building restrictions stalled progress such that the Cathedral wasn't finally consecrated until May 1961. And even at this stage building work was not complete. The Western Porches, Sacristy, Lady Chapel, Chapter house and tower were not completed until 1966.
Work has continued in subsequent years, with the latest addition in 2005 - completion of the statues on the West Front.
The Cathedral welcomes visitors all year round, from the end of morning services to the start of Evensong each day. However, the times of services can vary from weekday to weekend and special occasions or major events may prevent access to visitors. It is therefore essential to check the Cathedral website before planning a visit.
