Mullach Coire Ardachaidh

Photographer Description of Mullach Coire Ardachaidh

I had hoped that getting to the top of Mullach Coire Ardachaidh would allow me to take a panorama that took in not only Loch Loyne, but Loch Garry (famous for the 'Map of Scotland') in the next glen round the other side of the hill. It was not to be for, as this panoramic photograph shows, Loch Garry is mostly hidden by the hill. However, it was still a fantastic view, a true panoramic viewpoint of the surrounding area showing the glaciation impact of the last Ice Age on Scotland. A weather station was nearby to remind me that yes, Scotland has weather. Lots of it, very variable and (mostly) wet, though thankfully not just at this point. It was in fact raining over both Loch Cluanie and Loch Garry at this time though, neither of which are far away.

Mullach Coire Ardachaidh - Further Information

Panorama form a near the weather station at the top of Mullach Coire Ardachaidh hill (539m) overlooking Loch Loyne and the surrounding countyside.

Near to Loch Loyne and Loch Garry, this area appears unused because of the lack of visible civilisation. Don't be fooled though for the crofting and forestry works which together provide a high standard of land management, have transformed this wilderness into a busy productive area for lumber and livestock. Lying on the major road south to Glasgow, it is also ideal for transportation to the marts and markets in nearby Fort William.

The ridge of mountains visible to the west are popular with walkers and climbers and a network of pathways riddle this area. Indeed, access by road is not possible to many ares to the west of here, so for those wishing to enjoy the landscape for climbing, camping, trekking or orienteering, this is a common departure point - and a comfortable one given the already high altitude that this section of road reaches.

Travel and Getting There
Depart from the A87 Kyle to Inverness road at Cluanie, traveling south towards Fort William. This is approximately 10 miles south, near to Invergarry village.
