Roxburgh Dam is one of two hydroelectric dams across the Clutha River as it flows through Central Otago in New Zealand. The dam, situated about 30km south of Alexandra, was built between 1949 and 1958. It contains an eight-unit power station operated by Contact Energy with a capacity of 320 megawatts.
Behind Roxburgh Dam the Roxburgh Valley has flooded to form Roxburgh Lake. The other dam on the Clutha is the Clyde Dam, some 44km upstream. Water released by these dams during peak times or high river levels can rapidly affect river levels further downstream, and at Beaumont there are signs warning people of this potential danger.
