Introduction to Prague


Prague is the largest city in the Czech Republic. Prague lies on the River Vltava in central Bohemia and has remained the center of political, cultural an economic power of the Czech people for over 1000 years, growing up along trade routes in the area. The first people to settle here may have been the Boii Celtic tribe in about 500 BC. In the secnd half of the 9C the Czech Prince Bořivoj Přemyslovec moved his seat of power to Prague and established Prague Castle. Since then Prague Castle has remained the seat of Czech power and is today the home of the Czech president.

Sights and Attractions of Prague


Prague contains many famous sights and attractions, most thankfully intact due to the lack of war and other calamities to afflict other European Cities. Many famous sights are centered around the Old Town and Prage Castle. At the center of the Old Town is Town Square (Czech: Staroměstské náměstí), famous for Jan Hus Monument, the Astronomical Clock, the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn, and St. Nicholas Church.

Crossing the famous Charles Brige (Karlův most) over the Volta from the Old Town brings vistitors to Lesser Town (Malá Strana) of Prague. Here steep roads lead up to Prague Castle, and on the way you will find St Nicholaus church on the Malostranské náměstí and the Church of Our Lady Victorious, famous for the Infant Jesus of Prague (Pražské Jezulátko).
