Beneath Iron Bridge - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
The Iron Bridge was built between 1779 and 1781. It was the first cast iron arch bridge built in the world, spanning the River Severn. The Iron Bridge was built to serve the coal fields nearby. Cast iron was a new technology and people were encouraged to visit the area to see the new wonder. The bridge trustees also built the Tontine Hotel next to the bridge to cater for these tourists. Ironbrige town grew up around the bridge.
