Neuchâtel is the capital of the Swiss Neuchâtel canton, a city located in the middle of vineyards, one of the major wine producing areas of Switzerland. It is a picturesque town with yellow sandstone buildings that dominate the old city, which dates from the 16th and 17th century.
The name Neuchâtel is derived from a structure built as a fortress in the second period of government of Burgundy. The Duchy of Burgundy was one of the most important states of medieval Europe between 880 and 1482.
Neuchâtel is well known for its watchmakers, whose origins date back to the XVIII century, the manufacture of chocolates and even the variety of your typical fondue (fondue Neuchâteloise).
Neuchâtel is the largest lake entirely Swiss, Lake Neuchatel, about 20 km of inviting accessible beaches to all types of water activities.
