Prague Castle - Third Courtyard - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

This was a choice as to which parts of the Third Courtyard of Prague Castle would be lit by the sun in a 360 panorama. Later in the day the building opposite the cathedral were beautifully lit up, but the cathedral itself was left a dark mass. There would also have been less people. However, I think a picture highlighting the cathedral was preferable as this is, after all, the attraction tourists come to see.

Prague Castle - Third Courtyard - FURTHER INFORMATION

Prague Castle - Third Courtyard - Prague visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Prague Castle - Third Courtyard' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Hlavní město Praha.

Panorama from the Third Courtyard (třetî nádvořî) of Prague Castle (Pražský hrad) in Prague. Prague Castle is the most popular tourist attraction in Prague. This panoramic picture was shows the southern edge of the massive Saint Vitus Cathedral (Katedrála svatého Víta). On this side of the Cathedral is the Golden Gate (Zlatá brána) through which the kings used to enter the cathedral for coronation ceremonies. Above it is a recently restored 13C mosaic of the Last Judgment designed by Peter Praler.

Standing to the right of the cathedral in this courtyard is a granite monolith put here by Plečnick. It is an unfinished monument which was meant to compliment the granite bowl in the South Gardens of Prague Castle. Near to this is a tatue of St George astride a huge horse slaying a very small dragon. St George and his horse are 200 years younger than the rest of the sculpture. The surrounding buildings are covered in plasterwork by Pacassi. At the east end of the courtyard is the Bull Staircase which leads down to the South Gardens. Also at the east end is the entrance to the Old Royal Palace (Starý královský palác). The narrow passageway between the cathedral and the Old Royal Palace leads onto Jiřské námĕstí where both the Basilica and Convent of St. George are found.
