Prague Castle - Jirske namesti - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This was about the only place in Prague Castle from which a panorama would get most of the height of the Saint Vitus Cathedral. However, at this angle there is really not much to see except the balustrades at the rear. The rest of Jirske namesti is quite pleasant though.

Panorama from the Jiřské námĕstí, a squre of Prague Castle (Pražský hrad). Prague Castle is the most popular tourist attraction in Prague. This panoramic image was taken in front of St. George Basilica (Bazilika Sv. Jiří) whose russet-red Baroque facade faces the square. To the right of St. George Basilica is St. Georges Convent (Jiřský Klášter). On the opposite side of the square is the rear of the Saint Vitus Cathedral (Katedrála svatého Víta). To the left of the cathedral is the Third Courtyard of Prague Castle. The Rider's Staricase from the Old Royal Palace of Prague Castle exits onto the square.
Inside the Bazilika Sv. Jiří is arguably the most beautiful Romanesque building of Prague. The original basilica was built in the 10C, but replaced with the current building in 1173. The stone is almost honey coloured and concerts are often held here. There is a painting of the New Jerusalem form the Book of Revelations in the Bible in the choir vault that dates from the early 13C. The church also contains 16C frescoes in the burial chapel of sv. Ludmila, the grandmother of St. Wenceslas, and first Christian martyr and saint of Bohemia, who was murdered by her daughter-in-law in 921. Inside the crypt is a 16C statue of Vanity, a skeletal form covered in snakes.
Jiřský Klášter, next to the Basilica of St. George, was the firs monastery of Bohemia. It was founded in 973 by Mlada who became the first abbess. It was turned into a barracks by Joseph II in 1782 and now contains Rudolfine and Baroque collection of the Národní gallery.
