Kahena Beach - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Kehena Beach on the south coast of Hawaii is so well hidden that you are liable to drive right past it without knowing. The only clue is a row of cars seeming parked along the side of the 137 without reason. The climb down to the beach is a steep one and the path is unmaintained. However, if you are after freedom and seclusion, though without any amenities, Kahena Beach is one to go for. This panoramic picture gives a fair idea of the relaxed attitudes found at the beach, popular with locals as not many tourists get there.

Kehena beach is sometimes also called Dolphin beach as it is a popular place to see, and possibly swim with, dolphins. The beach is accessed by a steep path down the cliff. There is no official parking at the beach, and the clue is in the cars parked along the road near to the 19 mile marker. this path is not officially maintained. Kehena beach is very relaxed, there are no amenities and it is one of the unofficial nudist beaches on Hawaii Island (officially nude bathing is not permitted on Hawaii). You may also come across some use of weed on the beach.
For those looking for accommodation, the Kehena Beach Bungalows are nearby on the cliff top.
