Wittys Lagoon Regional Park - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Hand held panorama taken from the beach of Wittys Lagoon Regional Park near Metchosin on Vancouver Island. The tide was coming in and within about 20 minutes all this area was covered by sea. Image taken in June 2012 on my last day on Vancouver Island.
Wittys Lagoon Regional Park - FURTHER INFORMATION
Wittys Lagoon Regional Park - Greater Victoria visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Wittys Lagoon Regional Park' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Vancouver Island.
Wittys Lagoon Regional Park is close to the village of Metchosin, about 21km from downtown Victoria at the southern end of Vancouver Island. The park encompasses land around Wittys Lagoon and the beach along Parry Bay. Much of the terrain is covered by Douglas-fir, Broadleaf Maple and the occasional rare Garry Oak. Near the car park is the Witty's Lagoon at the Nature Information Centre which contains a number of interpretive displays.
Throughout the woods run a number of walking paths. Near the entrance runs Bilston Creek along which grows delicate Lady Fern. The brook tumbles over Sitting Lady Falls, a playful waterfall, into the lagoon itself. From here the water becomes increasingly brackish as it leads to the sea, and the lagoon is surrounded by mud flats and marsh. The walk meanders along the edge of the lagoon through woods before emerging onto a mixed sand and rock beach of Parry Bay.
The waters here are quite shallow, with sandy flats exposed at low tide. Prominent in the bay is small island. The beach is very popular with locals both after school and during the weekends and holidays.
