Snow in Snowdonia - Up Eryl Farchog - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

A few days of nice winter weather with a bit of snow is all we get around here because we are just to close to the sea (about 10 miles away). Everywhere else it is snow chaos but by the time I am uploading this the snow here is gone again and the usual rain is back. Hey, you can't have it all.

Snow in Snowdonia - Up Eryl Farchog - FURTHER INFORMATION

Snow in Snowdonia - Up Eryl Farchog - Snowdonia visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Snow in Snowdonia - Up Eryl Farchog' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Gwynedd.

Snowdonia offers some of the most dramatic walking and photographic opportunists in England. The scenery can be dramatic at any time of year, and truly breathtaking during the winter when the hills and mountains are covered with snow.

This panorama shows a view from the saddle (col) of Bwlch Eryl Farchog which forms a knife-edge ridge over the cliffs of Craig Yr Ysfa linking the peaks of Carnedd Llewelyn (1064m) with Pen yr Helgi Du (833m) of the Carneddau range. At 1064m, Carnedd Llwewlyn is the second highest peak by relative height in Wales, and lies on the border between Gwynedd and Conwy. In the valley below to the south lies the Ffynnon Llugwy reservoir, clearly visible in this image, from which the Afon Llugwy flows south down Cwm Llugwy.

The drop on either side of the ridge is very steep and the top of the ridge very narrow. Walks in this area are graded 7-8 in terms of difficulty, take between 7-9 hours and cover about 11 miles. Three popular walks include:

  • Carnedd Dafydd and Carnedd Llewelyn from Glan Dena, Llyn Ogwen
    Grade 7 | 9.75 miles | 7+ hours | 1074m Ascent
  • Carnedd Llewelyn, Foel Grach and Pen Llithrig y Wrach from Llyn Eigiau
    Grade 7 | 11 miles | 8+ hours | 1110m Ascent
  • Carnedd Dafydd, Carnedd Llewelyn and Yr Elen from Glan Dena, Llyn Ogwen
    Grade 8 | 11.5 miles | 9+ hours | 1402m Ascent
