Honokohau Bay - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
The access to the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park was down a dirt track through barren lava fields, which most of the traffic zooms past without a second glance. The area is thankfully undeveloped, there are no hotels and few facilities. But this made it all the more interesting to explore. This panorama is one of a series taken in the park and shows the lovely beach in Keauhou Bay.
Honokohau Bay - FURTHER INFORMATION
Honokohau Bay - Hawaii Island visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Honokohau Bay' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Hawaii.
Panorama of Honokohau Bay, found in the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park (NHP) on Hawaii Island. This NHP was formed in 1978 to preserve cultural and native Hawaiian traditional land divisions (ahupua'a) of Kaloko and Honokohau, where hundreds of Hawaiians fished and farmed. The NHP is a nature reserve and contains a number of historical sites. These include fishponds Like the Kaloko Fishpond, kahua (house site platforms), ki`i pöhaku (petroglyphs), hölua (stone slide), and heiau (religious site).
This panoramic picture was taken from the beach and shows one of the traditional huts. The beach is a great place to come for snorkeling and watching sea turtles (which you are forbidden to touch). Native religious festivals and fishing practices still go on at Kaloko-Honokohau NHP.
This is not to be confused with Honokohau Bay on Maui.
