The rugged coastline along Alii Drive is punctuated at points with small sandy beaches. This is not one, as you can see from the picture. The panorama reveals a black rocky lava shore with waves breaking upon the defensive wall. At least this bit of coast has not been taken over by a hotel and made a private, exclusive bit of hotel-resort owned land. Near here is a fantastic fish restaurant with panoramic views over the ocean, magic at sunset.

Travel and Getting There:
From Kona International Airport take the I-18 south 6 miles to Kailua-Kona. At Kailua-Kona, the I-18 becomes the I-11 which continues south and round Hawaii past Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and onto Hilo on the east side. This journey takes several hours.
