Empire Square (Praça do Império) is located in the luxurious Belém district of Lisbon and surrounded by popular tourist attractions making it a good meeting place. It is contains a beautiful garden full of roses, cypress, olive trees and many other indigenous plant species of Portugal. Within the square are three lakes and the central lake contains lights which playfully illuminate the water. The other lakes contain sculptures. The pavements of Empire Square are made of Portuguese Sidewalk, with decorative motifs and zodiac signs in three of the main entrances of the garden.
Empire Square was built during World War II and was the location of the Portuguese World Exhibition in 1940. This celebrated the 800th anniversary of the Independence of Portugal. The square was laid out using designs by Conttineli Telmo with Gomes Amorim doing the landscaping.
Empire Square lies at the heart of several important buildings, monuments and tourist attractions in Lisbon. Among these are the Manueline style Jeronimos Monastery, the UNESCO Cultural Heritage of all Humanity building, the Cultural Center of Belém and the Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium. On the other side of the square, along the River Tagus, lies the Monument to the Discoveries, Tower of Belém, the Museum of Popular Art and the Bridge April 25.
When the Jerónimos Monastery was built in the 16th century, the Tagus river entered the sea at the Monastery and the site of Empire Square was then Restelo Beach. The Belém neighborhood is near the Carcavelos - Estoril Coast and the Sintra - Cascais Natural Park; one of the most beautiful areas of Portugal]], full of stunning landscapes and pristine beaches.
