The Monument to the Discoveries is from the architect Cottinelli Telmo, has the shape of a caravel ship type essential to the realization of the Portuguese maritime explorations. The present monument was inaugurated in 1960 with the celebration of the 500 years since the death of Infante D. Henrique.
Leading the caravel is shown, with nine feet tall, the figure of Infante D. Henrique, the major driver of the Portuguese Discoveries.

The Monument to the Discoveries is from the architect Cottinelli Telmo, has the shape of a caravel ship type essential to the realization of the Portuguese maritime explorations. The present monument was inaugurated in 1960 with the celebration of the 500 years since the death of Infante D. Henrique.

The Monument to the Discoveries has two ramps 16 which were carved with figures 7 feet tall, which represent personalities from to the Discoveries, such as Pedro Nunes, Gil Eanes, Camões, Diogo Cão, Dias, Pedro Alvares Cabral and Vasco da Gama. Leading the caravel is shown, with nine feet tall, the figure of Infante D. Henrique, the major driver of the Portuguese Discoveries.

The access to the top of the monument is done by an elevator located inside the building, from which there is a fantastic panoramic view the city of Lisbon and the River Tejo.
