Saalbach Saalbach is situated at the low end of the Glemm Valley surrounded by numerous 3000m peaks. Combined with Hinterglemm, only 4 km away, the two Tyrolean style villages form a major part of the Saalbach/Hinterglemm ski circus in the Glemm Valley. There is now little open ground to form a boundary between the two villages as they have expanded so much in recent years. Saalbach as a reputation for some of the most lively après ski scenes in Europe.Hinterglemm is a bit more rustic, slightly less expensive, and perhaps better situated to reach the best red and black runs. However, this is counterbalanced by the 55 lifts serving all the slopes in the valley. Saalbach Skiing Saalbach-Hinterglemm, like Ischgl, is one of the biggest lift-linked resorts in Austria, with 200km of runs. It easily competes with French resorts for both convenience and piste maintenance. While the area caters for all abilities, it is particularly suited for intermediate skiers due to the presence of a large number of long, challenging red runs. There is limited terrain for the advanced skier. Boarders are spoilt, with 13km of boarders-only pistes, as well as a specialist park and half-pipe.Experts head for the North Facing Zwölferkogel - with its 3 km expert mogul descent - or the 100 km (65 miles) of off-piste terrain in the company of a local guide. The resort has plenty of snow cannons to ensure that any problems of the low altitude are overcome, and that the skiing season will run from the beginning of December right through to April. So while the slopes face south, skiers can benefit from the sun without too much threat to the snow. For those on a smaller budget there is the option of staying in the nearby village of Leogang in the next valley, which is less developed and quieter in the evenings. |
