Colchester is the oldest Roman town in Britain. The Celtic name for the town was was Camulodunon (the fortress of Camulos), named after the Celtic god of war. In AD 43 the Romans arrived and renamed the town 'Camulodunum'. Colchester served as the Roman capital of Britain until this was taken over by Londinuim (London).
