Bodmin - Shire Hall - FURTHER INFORMATION
Bodmin - Shire Hall - North Cornwall visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Bodmin - Shire Hall' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Cornwall.
The town of Bodmin in North Cornwall is one of the oldest towns in England, and the only Cornish town named in the Doomsday Book. It used to be called Petrockstow after the church of St. Petrock found in the town. For most of it's history, Bodmin was well known for tin mining, which formed the backbone of the economy of the area. Today this has shifted to tourism, and Bodmin is now a very popular tourist destination in Cornwall for those visiting Bodmin Moor.
The Shire Hall was built in 1837 as the ultimate centre for justice in Cornwall. The courtroom and holding cells beneath it have been restored and are open to visitors. There are regular re-enactments of a murder trial in the courtroom for tourists to be part of the jury. The Tourist Information Centre is in the Shire Hall.
