Hengistbury Head Centre - FURTHER INFORMATION
Christchurch virtual tour with a 360° panorama of 'Hengistbury Head Centre' linked to a Google map. A Christchurch attractions travel guide.
The Outdoor Centre on Hengistbury Head has, for over 30 years, provided education about the history, biology and geography of the headland to countless visitors, especially schoolchildren. It has been the location of numerous study and field projects helping our understanding of the geology and diverse natural history to be found here and around Christchurch Harbour.
Until recently the centre was managed by Hengistbury Head Association, and among the activities provided were activities exploring the prehistory, biology and geography (coastal protection, conservation management) of the head. Water activies such as sailing and canoeing were also run for both school groups and the general public.
Hengistbury Head attracts over 1 million visitors a year and there are concerns about management and protection to the headland which has eroded badly since it was quarried in the 19th century for ironstone.
