St Nicholas Church - Abbotsbury - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This panorama was taken from the graveyard of St Nicholas Church in Abbotsbury and shows the outside of the church with the hills of Dorset behind. The panorama was taken on a beautifully sunny day, and the image captures a scene typically found in many tourist brochures of Dorset.

The Parish Church of St. Nicholas in Abbotsbury dates from the 14C, and is built of local, golden, Corallian stone. The tower dates from the 15C and further alterations to the church were made in the next hundred years. St Nicholas church saw conflict during the civil war, and there are bullet holes in the Jacobean pulpit from the time that Colonel Strangways resisted a Parliamentary force here under Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper in 1644.
Just to the right of the church are the remains of the old Abbey that stood here for 500 years until it was destroyed by Henry VIII during the dissolution. Who says vandalism is restricted to certain classes. To the left of the church, on a separate hill just beyond the end of the ridge, is St. Catherine's Chapel. It looks really small in this picture, a silhouette on the top of the hill.
