Yes, Christchurch has a castle. Well, the remains of one at least. Twynham Castle was built in the early 12C and what remains is the motte and part of the 12C keep. This panoramic picture was taken from the top of the motte and shows some of the old keep walls, which were up to 3m thick. From here you can see some of the new buildings and Christchurch Priory. Not many visitors come to see the castle, but it is noted with pride on all the brown tourist information signposts as you drive into Christchurch.

Twynham Castle was built in the early 12C and what remains is the motte and part of the 12C keep. The body of the castle was demolished in 1652 after the Civil War. The ruined remains of Twynham Castle now stand on the top of a hill near the center of Cristchurch overlooking the Bowling Green and River Avon, a short distance from Christchurch Priory.

Take the A338 north from Bournemouth (south from Ringwood) until you come to the flyover sign posted for Christchurch and the Royal Bournemouth General Hospital. At this junction take the A3060 (Castle Lane East) east. At the next roundabout take the first exit onto the A35 which leads into Christchurch.
