Alanui Kahiko - Chain of Craters Road - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
A panorama of a lava flow in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. There is little way to comprehend what this must have looked like when the lava was flowing over the hillside towards the sea. Now it is cool, the black cascade demonstrates the power of the volcanoes that make up Hawaii.

Alanui Kahiko - Chain of Craters Road - Hawaii Island visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Alanui Kahiko - Chain of Craters Road' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Hawaii.
The Alanui Kahiko lookout on is near the bottom of Chain of Craters Road in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. This lava flow dates from 1970-1972 and buried the old road. Today the new road continues over this lava field and along the coast to a point where it is once again buried the road in recent times. From there you can walk over black, barren lava to a viewpoint near to where lava enters the sea after flowing through a series of 11km long lava tubes from Pu'u 'Ō'ō vent.
The Kealakomo lookout further up the volcano above the ridge gives another excellent perspective of this lava flow.
