The Halona Kahakai lookout is about 2/3 the way down Chain of Craters Road in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, between the Kealakomo picnic area and Alanui Kahiko lookout. From here there are good views over the 1970-72 lava flow that reached the sea.
Chain of Craters road continues on until a point where lava flowed over the road in recent times. Close to this point lava enters the sea through a series of 11km long lava tubes from Pu'u 'O'o in the East Rift Zone.
