Angkor province - Homeland of the Khmer civilisation

Angkor province in Cambodia was the seat of the Khmer empire, prolific through the 9th to 15th centuries A.D. "Angkor" name is derived from a Sanskrit word, "nagara," meaning "city." Famous for archaeological ruins on global importance, much of Angkorian's temples, hidden cities and ruins are located deep in the jungles and forests. To the north they are found around the Great Lake (Tonle Sap) and to the south in the land of the Kulen Hills, near modern day Siem Reap.

Angkor Wat - City of temples

Amidst these sites lies Angkor Wat, the country's most famous and important temple - indeed, so important that it features on the national flag and it has the honour of being designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over a thousand temples make up the complex site at Angkor Wat and visitor numbers reach over 2 million annually, although this is expected to rise exponentially because of developments in the Cambodian tourism and economy industries.
