About Himachal Pradesh

The Hindi for Himachal Pradesh is हिमाचल प्रदेश, the literal meaning is 'Land of snowy mountains', and the state capital is Shimla. The region is bordered to the north by Jammu and Kashmir. To th west is Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are to the south and Uttarakhand to the south-east. The eastern edge borders China. The topography of Himachal Pradesh varies greatly, and ranges from about 450m to 6,500m above sea level. These mountains provide a lot of rivers, many of which are used to generate electricity which is sold to other parts of India. The mountains and hills of the region are popular travel destinations for hiking, trekking and mountaineering. Among the popular sights is the Namgyal Monastery, the personal monastery of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, which is at Mcleod Ganj.
