About Maharashtra

Maharashtra state covers much of western India. It is the third largest state in the country and one of the most populous. The capital city of Maharashtra is Mumbai. The state has a rich history, with written records dating back to the 3rd century BC. The major cities outside of Mumbai include Aurangabad, Nagpur, Nashik, Navi Mumbai and Pune. For the visitor, there is much to see around the state from hill forts and temples to nature reserves and beach resorts. The state has over 550 forts, including a number of important sea forts, temples, caves an wildlife parks. Numerous beach resorts dot the 720km of coastline and whether on the sea or inland there are countless opportunities for adventure tourism. Lists of some of the highlights are given below.
