It covers just under 19,000Km square in area and is bordered by the provinces of Mazandaran (north), Qom and Markazi (south), Qazvin (west) and Semnan (east). Tehran city is both the capital of the province and has been the capital of the nation since 1778. Around 12million people live in Tehran, over 85% in cities or urban dwellings. Tehran is home to the economic and industrial heart of Iran with around a third of production and finance generated here.Around two-thirds of the province is pasture land for farming and agriculture, the rest is fringed by mountain ranges including Alborz, Lavasanat, Qasr-e-firoozeh, Savad Kooh and Firooz Kooh. The Alborz region in particular is noted for skiing and winter sports at the resorts of Dizin, Shemshak, and Tochal. The area is hot and dry on the plains, cold and humid nearer to the mountains. Some hydrological dams have been installed to maintain water supply in the mountain valleys. Tehran also has over 1500 sites of cultural significance registered, the oldest being the Firouzkah dating back to the 4th century BC.
