Chungcheongbuk-do is dominated by the Noryeong Mountains to the north and the Sobaek Mountains to the east. Various mountains in these ranges, like Mt. Songnisan, Mt. Sobaeksan and Mt. Woraksan, form some of the prime tourist attractions in the region, with lush tropical forest, deep river valleys and beautiful lakes such as Daecheongho Lake and Chungjuho (Chungju) Lake
Chungjuho Lake is near to the town of Chungju, which acts as a gateway to both the lake, Woraksan National Park and Suanbo Hot Springs. The town also holds the World Martial Arts Festival in the autumn. River ferries carry tourists on cruises along the lake past towering cliffs. Along the lake is the resort town of Danyang with a large temple complex, limestone caves and numerous hotels. Also alongside the lake is the former Presidential retreat palace of Cheongnamdae, built by President Chun Doo-hwan in 1983. Since 2003, the palace villa and grounds, also containing a museum of past presidents, have been open to the public.
A popular travel destination in the province is Songnisan National Park, in the middle of the Sobaek range, which attracts walkers and hikers all year round. The most popular attraction in the park is the temple, Beopjusa. The park is accessed through either Boeun-gun in the Beopjusa area or through the Hwabuk/Ssanggok area. Most of the well known attractions are around Beopjusa , but the Hwabuk section is renowned for beautiful valleys and larger waterfalls. Just below Beopjusa is the Songnisan tourist village, full of shops, restaurants and a number of hotels. A local delicacy is trout caught by the nearby Osong Falls. Songnisan National Park charges and admission fees to visitors.
