About South Korea
South Korea is officially known as the Republic of Korea (ROK), and often referred to simply as 'Korea'. It occupies the southern half of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia, sharing a land border with North Korea to the north. Nearby are Japan and China. The capital city is Seoul.
South Korea is sub-divided into 16 metropolitan areas and provinces (Do's). The metropolitan areas are Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Incheon, Gwangju, Daejeon and Ulsan. The provinces are Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, Chungcheongbuk-do (Northern Chungcheong), Chungcheongnam-do (Southern Chungcheong), Jeollabuk-do (Northern Jeolla), Jeollanam-do (Southern Jeolla), Gyeongsangbuk-do (Northern Gyeongsang), Gyeongsangnam-do (Southern Gyeongsang) and the self-governing Jeju-teukbyeoljachido.
