Canterbury - South Island, New Zealand

Canterbury is known in Māori as 'Waitaha'. It is the largest region in New Zealand. To the south the regional boundary is the Waitaki River, beyond which lies Otago. Along the whole of the western edge are the Southern Alps and the West Coast region. The regions of Tamsan and Marlboroough are to the north, with the Conway River running along the northern boundary. It is often divided into North Canterbury (north of the Rakaia River), Mid Canterbury (from the Rakaia River to the Rangitata River), South Canterbury (south of the Rangitata River) and Christchurch, which covers Christchurch, the principle city of the region.
