Cathedral Cove

Photographer Description of Cathedral Cove

This panorama shows the reward after walking for about an hour over a coastal path. Cathedral Cove is beautiful, with white sand, blue seas and shear cliffs. Access to this part of the cove on foot is through a sea arch cave which is exposed a lower tides. Cathedral Cove is much more than a beach. It is a popular place for sea kyaking. Now for the walk back again...

Cathedral Cove - Further Information

Cathedral Cove is part of the Te Whanganui-A-Hei marine reserve on the Coromandel Peninsula. It is often touted as one of the must see sights of natural beauty in the region, comparable in beauty to many of the sights on the Great Ocean Road in Australia. The cove is set in steep, white limestone cliffs, has a fine white sand beach, and a large stack stands dramatically just offshore. Further out to sea are numerous other small stacks and islands.

Cathedral Cove is accessed by an hour's long coastal walk from the car park near Hahei, which passes by a couple of other pretty bays (Gemstone Bay and Stingray Bay) on the way. The coastal path terminates at Mare's Leg Cove and from there you have to pass under a long sea arch / cave to get to the Cathedral Cove beach. At high tide this may mean getting wet. The entrance to the sea arch can be seen at the southern end of the beach, the opposite end to the sea stack. The whole coastline is very beautiful, and is very popular with sea kyaking.

Images and pictures of Cathedral Cove are used extensively in the tourist information publications about the region.
